WASHINGTON – Do you want to reach out to Mitt Romney? Just “poke” him.
Facebook.com, a popular Web site originally used by college students to track photos, profiles and the latest buzz about their inner ring of friends, is now used by Web-savvy presidential candidates.
Romney recently became part of the Facebook crowd, posting lengthy profiles and photos in an election cycle when many presidential candidates are looking to the Web to reach out to supporters.

Campaigns hope to lure young voters to polls
WASHINGTON — Ah, youth, that fickle force in politics. Young people bring energy, passion, creativity and technical wizardry to the presidential campaign — everything, it seems, except impact on Election Day.
With their Web logs, Facebook profiles and college rallies, the 2008 presidential candidates are lavishing attention on a group that displays unbridled enthusiasm early in the campaign but tends to lose interest when the voting starts.
For all the star-studded voter registration drives featuring the likes of Madonna and Sean "Diddy" Combs, more than half of the people in the United States age 18 to 24 who are eligible to vote typically are no-shows on Election Day. By comparison, some 70 percent of those 45 and older cast their ballots, according to the Census Bureau.

Bloggers too often miss the mark
In this world of electronic wizardry and instant opinion, the blogger just may be king. So, every presidential candidate wants one or two to tap into the enormous potential of the Internet with its ability to stimulate huge amounts of campaign cash from obsessive tube watchers who seem to believe nearly anything they read on this creation as long as it's bad stuff about those who don't agree with them.
Whether or not the staid world of national politics is ready for these undisciplined rants and diatribes remains to be seen. But if there were doubts about the perils of relying too much on these newest of media darlings during the coming campaign, there is already ample evidence to change one's thinking. When it comes to bloggers, what the candidate buys he may not be able to live with, given a general insensitivity to political correctness, accuracy and decent language.

Campaigns evolving amid new technologies to attract voters
John Edwards launched his presidential bid on YouTube, asking viewers to text-message him. Hillary Rodham Clinton threw her hat in the ring in a more controlled fashion, with a video posting to her website. Then Barack Obama stole some of her thunder by announcing his White House aspirations in a video that quickly flew around the Internet. Now the Illinois senator is rocketing toward a half-million friends on the social-networking site Facebook.com.
The Internet and mobile technology have fed an explosion in person-to-person communication and so-called viral marketing that are shaping up to be powerful forces in the 2008 election. The combination will create enormous opportunities for campaigns but also raises the risk that an unguarded moment will spread at lightning speed to sink a candidacy, political consultants say.

Edwards happy to not be in the news
A week ago the Edwards blog was frustrated and begging for some news coverage,(Link) but after the Hillary Obama Drama over the comments Geffen said, the Edwards Campaign is now thankful they aren't in the news.
from Edwards Blog
" John Edwards isn't receiving as much press as his opponents, but I'll bet Hillary and Obama wish their apparent feud was not in the media, everyday. The Democrats do not need divisiveness in our party. I hope we are all on the same team, here. The showing of their fangs, as we are watching the developments in the other Democratic candidates' political camps, is not helping us, but instead, their flawed, strategy is giving the Republicans more meat for their tables.
All Democrats running for any office should remember: We must defeat Republican candidates, if we are to regain a true democracy in America. If that means we have to bite the bullet and not criticize too vehemently, other Democratic candidates, then so be it. From what I have seen, Mr. Edwards is the most positive, eloquent candidate, finding it unnecessary to bash his opponents, as a means to winning the Presidency."

UC Merced student president uses Internet rally for Obama
The presidential election may be more than a year-and-a-half away, but Josh Franco already knows whom he wants in the Oval Office.
Franco, 21, was recently appointed as the statewide coordinator of Students for Barack Obama, a political action committee with approximately 80 chapters at universities nationwide.
He discovered the organization on Facebook, one of the Internet's largest social networking sites which currently has nearly 17 million registered users, according to the Associated Press.

Americans' campaign stop? The Internet
CHICAGO -- Forty-two percent of Americans expect they will seek out more information from the Internet in 2008 than they did in the 2004 presidential election, according to survey results announced today by Performics, the performance-based marketing division of DoubleClick.
Performics' survey reveals much about the public's perception and use of the Internet as a channel for gathering information related to politics and the 2008 presidential election. While the survey confirmed that television news and talk shows, local and national newspapers and news radio are the primary means for political information, campaigns and candidates, 42 percent of Americans say the Internet will play an important role in helping them decide who they will vote for in the 2008 presidential election.

Local campaigns move to Facebook, MySpace
Peter Clerkin was curious.
Clerkin, former campaign director of the Hayhurst for Congress campaign, created “Draft Hayhurst,” a group on Facebook.com that urged voters to encourage City Councilman Tom Hayhurst, D-4th District, to run for mayor.
Hayhurst ran unsuccessfully for the 3rd District congressional seat in November.
Clerkin, 26, said the group was not a serious attempt to persuade Hayhurst to run for office, but was an experiment to gauge the effectiveness of a political group on Facebook, a social-networking site best known for connecting college students. The group was only up one day, but attracted about 80 members before Clerkin was informed Hayhurst had no intention of running and took down the group. Still, he said he will most likely include a group in the campaign strategy of the next candidate he works for.
